Tests Reveal WV Public Schools are Inferior (Nation’s Report Card 2019)

By Karl C. Priest December 26, 2019

Note: Information for any state can be obtained from the links in this article.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the “Nation’s Report Card,” has revealed AGAIN that West Virginia public (i.e. government) schools students are (to be kind) not doing very well academically. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which is “a congressionally mandated project” (https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/assessments/) conducts testing in different subjects and is highly respected by educators. The foundational subjects of reading and math are tested every two years in grades four and eight.

In 2019, the average score of fourth-grade students in West Virginia was 231 out of 500). This was lower than the average score of 240 for public school students in the nation. West Virginia is fifth from the BOTTOM counting Puerto Rico.

If you hover your mouse over the state in the map it says, “2019 percentage at or above basic for West Virginia is significantly lower than national public.” (emphasis added)

In 2019, the average mathematics score of fourth-grade students in West Virginia was 231 (out of 500). This was lower than the average score of 240 for public school students in the nation. West Virginia is eighth from the bottom counting Puerto Rico.

If you hover your mouse over the state in the map it says, “2019 percentage at or above basic for West Virginia is significantly lower than national public.” (emphasis added)

Nationally, the report states that “Mathematics scores increase at grade 4, decrease at grade 8 compared to 2017.” (https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/highlights/mathematics/2019/) Two points regarding that statement:

1. The longer the kids are in public (government) schools the worse they do.

2. The increase at Grade 4 was only one point (240 to 241).

The terrible NAEP scores have been that way since 2009.
